Your family pet

can start the day without caffeine,
is always cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,
resists complaining and boring people with their troubles,
eats the same food every day and is grateful for it,
understands when their loved ones are too busy to give them any time,
takes criticism and blame without resentment,
conquers tension without medical help,
can relax without alcohol,
can sleep without the aid of drugs

and loves you unconditionally.

Taia is a loggerhead sea turtle that had a bacterial infection of the intestines that caused her to float at the top surface of the water. She was rescued at the seven mile bridge and brought to the Turtle Hospital in Marathon, Florida. Her treatment consisted of antibiotics, fluids for hydration, vitamins, a healthy diet and lots of rest. After almost three months of rehabilitation, Taia was ready to be released to her life at sea. My friends and I were excited to go to Sombrero Beach and watch as they released Taia back to sea. She looks like she is smiling in this picture taken by Honora Shaffer.

I have had the pleasure of working with Forgotten Felines in Marathon, Florida Keys. They provide veterinary care and food to homeless and abandoned cats. We had noticed a colony of feral cats here where we live and with Forgotten Feline’s help, we trapped, spay/neutered and returned them to their area. We were fortunate to safely trap many cats and a couple of times, we unintentionally, got a raccoon and one opossum. I found the raccoon to be so calm and just patiently waited for me to open the cage and he just walked away after having a delicious meal. The opossum hissed at me once, but eventually walked away after finally realizing that I opened the other end of the cage.

If return is not possible, Forgotten Felines will seek safe homes locally or place in a sanctuary in Georgia. Forgotten Felines volunteers feed over 500 homeless and abandoned cats every day.

You can read more about them at keysforgottenfelines.org

New Visitors in the Back Yard

All the little birds were chirping and  building their nests while the chipmunks and red and gray squirrels were scurrying about when suddenly a pair of mallard ducks waddled into the back yard and started feeding on cracked corn and sunflower seeds. Since breeding season is in early Spring, the female may have laid her eggs recently. Clutch size is 8-13 eggs, which is more than half of the female’s body weight. Ducklings can immediately swim as soon as they hatch. I’ll be scoping the area periodically in the early a.m. and maybe eventually see the whole family.

Sooty the Red Bellied Woodpecker

One day, we heard a noise in the fireplace, which sounded like a bird flapping his wings. We looked outside at the chimney and a redbellied woodpecker was looking down and chirping. It became apparent that the woodpecker’s mate was stuck above the damper. We called the Wild Bird Rescue Center and they sent over two men who spent 2 1/2 hours trying to rescue the woodpecker. The damper was broken and stuck shut. They finally forced it open enough to grab little Sooty, who immediately started sqawking. He appeared to be fine, but was kept overnight to be sure he was okay. They cleaned his eyes, which were covered with soot. The next morning, Sooty was released and flew happily into the tree next door. It was a good feeling to see him healthy and happy. We’ve since seen him here with his  mate.
